Colic and Chiropractic Care
Any parent who has had a newborn that suffers from colic will tell you how heartbreaking (and frustrating) it is to see your child in pain and be unable to soothe him or her. While colic affects an estimated 20-25 percent of infants, experts aren’t entirely sure of the root cause. However, families have found relief through chiropractic adjustments for colic symptoms.
What is “colic”?
There is no consensus on the exact cause of colic, however, many experts suspect that the issue arises from the gut (the term “colic” stems from the Greek word “kolikos,” meaning “suffering in the colon”). Some possible issues could be an immature digestive system/gas, infant acid reflux, food allergies or sensitivity and more. Other non digestive issues could be overstimulation or tobacco exposure.
How is colic identified?
The main marker of a colicky baby is intense crying episodes. All babies cry, of course, however the cry of a colicky baby is different. Your otherwise healthy, well-fed baby may be diagnosed with colic if he or she fits what many doctors call the “Rule of 3s”:
- Loud, piercing cry that begins around 3 weeks old
- Lasts more than 3 hours a day
- Occurs more than 3 days a week
- Continues for over 3 weeks
A baby who is showing these kinds of symptoms is in pain and needs help to find the cause of their pain. If the cause is not addressed the child may in later years not cry as a toddler from pain but may have sleep problems, be a fussy eater and have behavioural problems.
How can Chiropractic Care help?
A Paediatric Chiropractor is trained to use very gentle techniques on these delicate bodies to have a profound effect on their function and health. As a result they will often get relief from the pain they have been experiencing. This is so important to help the bonding between the mother and infant to be more relaxed. Both the mum and baby will often be less distressed which is beneficial for them both.
Paediatric Chiropractors acknowledge that the natural birth process is one of the most traumatic events a child will go through in their life. Obviously if there is intervention used like cesarean section, forceps and vacuum extraction there is much greater risk of trauma as a result. Sometimes a baby may have been in a confined space in utero which also may have caused irritation to their body. It is common for these injuries to create stress in the body which may impact the nerves controlling the baby’s digestive system. Poor control of the digestive system as a result of this nerve interference can lead to poor function which can often result in pain and colic-like symptoms. Chiropractors understand that relieving the interference to the nervous system may have a positive effect on the function of the digestive system and improve brain function.
Chiropractors recognise the importance of maintaining a healthy nervous system for optimal body health and function as well as the prevention of disease. Colic is one of the many problems infants may experience due to poor nervous system function.
