How to keep at your best this Holiday Season

What a fun time of year it is catching up and spending time with family and friends. Unfortunately though, many people let their health go, which they have worked so hard at achieving.

Wouldn’t it be great to survive the party season with as little disruption to your healthy routine as possible? Below are 5 tips to make the party season a part of your healthy routine rather than letting everything go!

  • Keep to your morning routine

Remember, how you spend the first 2 hours of your day is what sets you up for the day ahead.  Even when time is limited with extra activities on during the festive season, still make it a point to get up and exercise first thing. Even if you have to cut the time frame back. Aim to get at least 20-30 minutes. Exercise is not only good for your metabolism and calorie control, it also releases hormones that help you feel good, thus decreasing stress in the body at this busy time. You really can’t afford to give away your exercise routine!

Always make sure you stick to having a wholesome breakfast, which may even be a smoothie full of great nutrients, as well as having all your vitamins and supplements. It is even more important to keep these up at this time of year when you can be burning the candle at both ends.

  • Get enough sleep

When you are sleeping your body is healing and regenerating. Make sure you are getting to bed earlier if you are feeling stressed and run down. It is ok to say “No” to ensure you do not over commit and run yourself down.  If you are going to bed extra late because of parties, your body will be in a state of jet lag, which can take time to get over. Where you can, try and have your events through the day so as you can still get to bed at a reasonable time.

  • 80:20 rule

Set the 80:20 rule as the standard for the party season. If 80% of the time you eat the absolute best you can following all the principles of what healthy people do,  and what we teach our clients, this is going to make up for the 20% of the time where you may consume something which you wouldn’t normally. This will prevent you from overloading your system with processed foods etc. It is important to find a balance, without beating yourself up, causing undue stress when you overindulge.

It is still advised that you make wiser food and beverage choices where possible. If it is a menu you can chose, opt for salads, and ask for the dressing on the side so you can control how much you are having, vegetables and a lean meat or fish.  If it is a party where the food is supplied have a healthy snack before you go to avoid the temptation to overindulge.

Always watch your portions, particularly if it is finger food that is being passed. It is easy to lose track of your consumption.

  • Keep Hydrated

Keeping hydrated will keep the hunger pains down and thus you are less likely to pick at foods that are not as ideal for your health.  You are best to be drinking 2-3 litres of water per day. Hydration is really important if you are having a couple of alcoholic drinks while you are out. If you have one glass of alcohol followed by a glass of water this will prevent you from over consuming alcohol.

  • Minimise Stress

It is such a busy time of year when you are expected to do all of your normal weekly duties as well as the extra social events and shopping etc. This can result in stress building in your body which can start to affect your health and how your body is functioning.
